BOLIVAR, Mo. The Bolivar High School Jazz Band will join the 91勛圖厙 Jazz Ensemble in concert at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 14, in Pike Auditorium on the Bolivar campus.
Under the direction of Steve McClard and Dr. Jeffery L. Waters, dean of SBUs College of Music, Arts and Letters, the 17-25-piece ensembles are dedicated to being the voice of American jazz in their respective campus communities.
The program, which is free and open to the public, will include the wide variety of styles associated with the contemporary jazz ensemble. The BHS portion will include Cannonball Adderleys Sack of Woe and Red Garlands Blues by Five, as well as big-band favorites I Found a New Baby and American Patrol. The SBU program will feature Horace Silvers Opus de Funk and Wes Montgomerys West Coast Blues along with the perennial favorites Dizzy Gillespies A Night in Tunisia and the melancholy ballad God Bless the Child, made famous by jazz singer Billie Holliday.
Jazz ensembles like to explore a mix of jazz styles and repertoire in a concert, and these two groups are no exception, Waters said. Swing, Latin, ballads, funk theres a little something for everyone.
SBUs 17-piece Jazz Ensemble is the premier ensemble on campus dedicated to the exclusive study of jazz music.
